Dear Parents and Families,
Due to the winter weather currently upon us, including cold temperatures and snowstorms, we want to share a few important tips and resources to help keep our students and families safe.
If You Must Be Outdoors:
Please ensure children are dressed warmly with coats, hats, gloves, scarves, and waterproof boots.
Dress in layers to help maintain body heat.
Limit time outdoors when temperatures are extremely cold and take frequent breaks indoors when possible.
Be cautious of icy conditions and follow all safety guidelines.
If You Do Not Need to Be Outdoors:
It is recommended to remain indoors during extreme cold and snowstorms.
Create a warm, comfortable space at home for reading and schoolwork.
Encourage light indoor movement such as stretching or short activity breaks.
Free Reading Resources:
Families are encouraged to visit the DOE Sora website, which offers free eBooks and audiobooks for students.
Sora can be accessed on phones, tablets, or computers, making it a great resource during winter weather.

Good day PS 54 Families and Guardians,
We hope this message finds you well. As we closely monitor the winter storm expected this weekend, we want to keep you informed about the possibility of transitioning to remote learning and how we are preparing to support our students and families.
Our teachers are well prepared and ready should we need to move to remote instruction. Lessons and activities have been carefully planned to ensure learning continues smoothly. While we understand that technology may not always work perfectly, please know that we are ready to work through any challenges together and support students every step of the way.
Remote Learning Information (If We Go Remote):
Where to Find Updates and Important Information:
Please be sure to regularly check:
Technology or Login Issues:
If your child is unable to log in on Monday or experiences technical difficulties, please do not panic. Contact your child’s teacher and Mr. Shaw (email pshaw3@schools.nyc.gov). If you need assistance in Spanish, please contact Ms. Rivera (her email address is srivera90@schools.nyc.gov). She will speak with the person who can assist you, and that person will call you back. We understand these situations happen and will work with families to support students and address any missed learning.
Cold Weather Safety Reminders:
Most importantly, please stay safe during the storm. Enjoy the snow if you can, warm up with some cocoa, and spend quality time with your loved ones.
Thank you for your continued partnership, flexibility, and support of our PS 54 community. We will do our very best to keep everyone informed as we move through the weekend.
Respectfully,

Dear Families,
We are excited to partner with you to help your child become a strong reader!
As part of the citywide NYC Reads initiative, your child’s teacher provides your child with daily research-based reading instruction. One of the best things you can do to support your child at home is to make reading fun and help them learn to love reading. You can do this by reading with your child or by encouraging them to read independently—in any language. But it can be tricky to find free and fun books for your child to read. On the back of this page are some tips to help you find books (hard copies, e-books, and audiobooks) that are free and fun for your child. Please reach out to your child’s teacher, librarian, or our Parent coordinator if you want to learn more.
With gratitude
Emma Velazquez

What is NYC Reads?
This year, PS 54 - The Detective Rafael Ramos School will participate in NYC Reads, a citywide initiative to help all NYC Public Schools students become strong readers. Strong reading skills are essential for students to graduate from high school, access higher education, have successful careers, and create economic stability. And, strong reading skills are the foundation that will help our students become critical thinkers, capable of solving the problems of the future and carrying out the civic engagement activities necessary to sustain our democracy.
As part of NYC Reads, all K-5 schools use one of three evidence-based reading programs. Our district uses EL Education. The curriculum will help our children develop foundational reading skills and build knowledge about rich topics, like the Civil Rights Movement, the sea, or animal behavior and adaptations.
